Orono Lagoon

Welcome to our Orono website and we thank you for the opportunity to share with you a little bit about our fantastic Lagoon 42 world cruising catamaran Orono which is now for sale.

Now, settled in Borneo long term and having purchased a larger catamaran, we are finding we are using Orono less and less and have reluctantly decided to offer her for sale for $440,000 AU.

Having taken us around the world in comfort and safety, our hope is that she will find new owners who will love her as much as we do and take her on her next adventure.
Please feel free to explore our site and discover why Orono is such a special world cruiser…..

Make no mistake, Orono is no flimsy, plastic fantastic - A proven world cruiser, she's built for the long haul - designed and outfitted to take you anywhere - in any conditions - and all in well-appointed comfort and safety.

Built in France in late 2007 and originally fitted with twin electric, hybrid engines (as part of Lagoon's exploration of alternative technology), we purchased Orono brand new in France and sailed her down to Barcelona where we cruised the western Mediterranean. Unfortunately the battery capacity and power generation of the experimental technology did not live up to expectations and we returned to the Lagoon shipyard to refit Orono with two, brand new, twin 75hp Yanmar diesel sail-drives.

Professionally repowered by Lagoon, Orono was then sailed across the Atlantic to cruise the Caribbean before transiting the Panama Canal and sailing to Tonga where she was placed in the high-end, selective charter for two seasons.

In mid 2011 we sailed Orono down to Brisbane were she underwent a significant refit to update a number of her onboard systems. She was also reflagged as a fully imported Australian registered vessel with all taxes and duties paid. With new electronics and instrumentation, we then took Orono up the Queensland coast and across to Malaysia, to her present home in the luxurious marina resort of Sutera Harbour, Kota Kinabalu, Borneo.

Borneo is one of the few ports in South East Asia where a foreign flagged vessel can stay indefinitely and Sutera Harbour, Kota Kinabalu is one of the most secure and yacht friendly marinas in the region. Over the last twelve months,  Orono has undergone additional refurbishment including:

  • Installation of 3 new toilets
  • Replacement of trampolines,
  • New bathroom tap fittings and mirrors
  • New house batteries (6)
  • Installation of two new air conditioners
  • Removal and and overhaul of starboard engine
  • New seals and service - Raymarine auto pilot hydraulic ram
  • AIS installation
  • Sand blast and re-galvanize anchor and chain
  • Full engine and generator services
  • New anti foul and sail drive servicing and anode replacement (March 2013)
  • New bilge pumps, battery monitory system & gas bottles
Orono is a very crew and family-friendly vessel, with simple controls and uncluttered decks. Packing more accommodation and storage space for her size than any other catamaran on the market, her solid, chunky moldings and deep cockpit coamings add to her sense of safety and security throughout.
All of Orono's sail-control lines return to the helm position, allowing you to reef the main with no need to leave the cockpit; and with her additional foot-operated electric winch, she is easily handled by one. Her best feature for a family of four and frequent guests? - the fact that she is a simple to sail, solid, safe and extremely comfortable live aboard vessel, ideally suited for extended blue-water cruising.

With a spacious and open main cabin, boasting 360 degree panoramic views, Orono's large, well-lit and ventilated guest cabins, complete with Q/S 'island' beds and her large storage spaces below, make her the ideal, easily-sailed. family cruising vessel in all conditions with her gull-wing, forward bridge deck providing greater comfort in heavy seas
